An auto-rickshaw driver who was brutally beaten on allegations of stealing an IPS battery in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram upazila on November 11, has died.
The victim is Hasanur Rahman, 29, of the Mirzarkot area of Patgram municipality.
He died at home while undergoing treatment last afternoon.
Locals and family members told The Daily Star that an IPS battery, stolen from the house of businessman Yunus Ali in Thakurbari area of Patgram municipality, was found in Hasanur’s rickshaw on 11 November afternoon.
Later, Yunus’ son and relatives beat Hasanur severely after detaining him.
As Hasanur’s wife Bilkis Begum, 24, went to rescue her husband, she was also assaulted.
With the help of locals, Bilkis eventually rescued her husband in a critically condition and took him to a local private hospital for treatment.
Hasanur was brought to his house from the hospital and was being provided treatment at home where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon.
Bilkis Begum told The Daily Star that her husband was not a thief. Some thieves had left the stolen battery in her husband’s rickshaw and fled.
“My husband became seriously ill due to the brutal beating and finally died on Saturday,” she said.
She said she would take legal action after consulting with her relatives.
Anisur Rahman, younger brother of the deceased, said his brother’s earnings used to run the family.
Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarkar told The Daily Star last night that he had heard about the incident.
No complaint has been filed with the police station
“We will take immediate legal action if we receive a complaint,” he said.
